Iran Inaugurates Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant

Iran has inaugurated its first nuclear power plant, which has been built with Russian help.

The Bushehr plant in southern Iran was linked to the national grid early this month after years of delays.

Tehran organized a ceremony attended by Russian officials to mark the plant reaching 40 percent of its 1,000-megawatt capacity.

Iranian Vice President Fereidoun Abbasi told state television that full-capacity operations were expected to begin in December after a series of additional tests.

In Vienna, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Yukiya Amano, again expressed concerns about Iran’s nuclear development program.

“Iran is not providing the necessary cooperation to enable the agency to provide credible assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran,” he said, “and therefore to conclude that all nuclear material in Iran is in peaceful activities.”

Some nations are worried Iran’s civilian nuclear program will help Tehran develop nuclear weapons.
