Ivory Coast fighting spreads to Abidjan

Ivory Coast’s internationally-recognized president has sent his troops in to battle for control of the commercial capital of the Ivory Coast.

With the incumbent leader still refusing to give up power, forces on both sides battled for the city of Abidjan on Saturday.

Forces loyal to the internationally accepted President Alassane Ouattara battled the troops still loyal to incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo near Gbagbo’s home in the Cocody neighborhood and around the presidential palace.

Fighting also took place outside the headquarters of the state-run television which had been broadcasting pro-Gbagbo material.

Gbagbo’s has not been seen in public since the fighting began.

Gbagbo has previously said he has no intention of ceding power.
