Nitrogen will be injected into a reactor at Japan’s crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant to reduce an explosion risk, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) was quoted by the Kyodo news agency as saying on Wednesday.
Hidehiko Nishiyama, a spokesman for the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, said there was no ”immediate danger” of an explosion.
TEPCO has also been working to stop highly radioactive water from leaking into the sea and cleaning up contaminated water within the plant.
The Japanese government is reviewing the radiation exposure level currently used to designate the evacuation zone around Fukushima.
It has ordered residents within a 20-kilometer radius of the nuclear plant to evacuate and those in the 20-30 km zone to stay indoors.
