Japanese leader urges country to unite

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan urged his nation to unite to rebuild their earthquake-ravaged country in a television address on Friday.

“We will rebuild Japan from scratch,” Kan said. “We must all share this resolve.”

A massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake and powerful tsunami hit northeastern Japan on March 11. The official death toll has reached 6,405 and 10,259 are registered as missing.

“We don’t have any room to be pessimistic or be discouraged,” Kan said, describing the disaster as a “great test for the Japanese people.”
