Japanese survives tsunami, floating on his house’s roof

A Japanese Self-Defense Force destroyer rescued on Sunday a man 15 km off Fukushima prefecture, while he was floating on his house’s roof after tsunami had swept away his dwelling, Jiji news agency reported.

A devastating tsunami, followed by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake on Friday took aback a 60-year old Hiromitsu Shinkawa when he was picking up some documents at home. He did not manage to escape and was swept away along with his house, Jiji said.

Japans’s Self-Defense Force destroyer Chokai spotted the man and took him aboard. Shinkawa has suffered minor arm and face injures. He was sent to a local hospital in the town of Soma, Mainichi paper said.

His wife had been swept by the tsunami wave.

The death toll from Japan’s tremor may climb to over 10,000 people in the Miyagi prefecture alone, local police chief Naoto Takeuchi said on Sunday.
