Kvitova and Berdych bring Hopman Cup to Czech Republic

The Czech Republic have claimed their second Hopman Cup in history after beating France 2-0 to win the final in Perth.

Petra Kvitova overcame Marion Bartoli 7-5, 6-1 in the opening singles match and Thomas Berdych beat Richard Gasquet 7-6, 6-4. Thus the mixed doubles match became a no-contest deal as the Czech sealed the trophy.

Both Kvitova and Berdych were unbeaten in singles matches throughout the tournament.

It was the Czech Republic’s second Hopman Cup win – the first coming in 1994 with Petr Korda and Jana Novotna, while France are yet to win it despite this being their second final appearance.

The tournament, held every January in Western Australia since 1989, is widely regarded as the ITF World Mixed Team Championships and marks the beginning of the new tennis season.
