Hammer-thrower Tatyana Lysenko and runner Maria Savinova and have brought Russia two more gold medals at the World Athletics Championships in the South Korean city of Deagu.
Lysenko tossed her four-kilogram hammer 77 meters and 13 centimeters, beating second-placed Betty Heidler of Germany by over a meter (76.06).
The bronze medal went to Zhang Wenxiu of China, who recorded a result of 75 meters and 3 centimeters.
Defending champion Anita Wlodarczyk of Poland finished fifth with a throw of 73 meters 56 centimeters.
The Daegu triumph is the biggest achievement in Lysenko’s career, whose best achievement thus far had been a bronze at the World Championships in Helsinki back in 2005.
Meanwhile, Maria Savinova has beaten defending champion Caster Semenya of South Africa on the home straight to win the women’s 800 meters.
The 26-year-old Russian produced the season’s best time of one minute and 55.87 seconds.
Semenya, who made headlines due to the IAAF’s investigation into her gender after her victory in Berlin in 2009, took silver with a time of one minute and 56.35 seconds.
The bronze went to 2007 champion Janeth Jepkosgei of Kenya.
Lysenko and Savinova brought Russia its eighth and ninth golds in South Korea, which sees the country’s team sitting second in the overall medals count.
Team USA are in the lead, being just one gold up on Russia.
