The last two Russians at the US Open, Vera Zvonareva and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, have had their campaigns at Flushing Meadows ended.
Australia’s Samantha Stosur defeated second seed Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-3 in the women’s quarter-finals of the US Open on Thursday.
On paper, the ninth-seeded Stosur’s 6-3, 6-3 victory looked like an upset but it was the 2010 French Open finalist’s seventh successive victory over the Russian.
Stosur was joined in the last four by three-time US Open winner Serena Williams, who proved too strong for 17th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Serena breezed to a 7-5, 6-1 victory, despite hitting just one ace during the game.
