Lawmaker in Hospital after Drunken Ax Attack

A district lawmaker in the Russian Urals Sverdlovsk region has been hospitalized after an inebriated retiree unhappy with growing utility tariffs attacked her with an ax, police said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the town of Kirovograd on Tuesday afternoon. The man, in his 60s, arrived at the office of a construction company where the lawmaker worked as the deputy director and voiced his outrage over the “high” price he has to pay for central heating at his house, a local police spokesman said.

The retiree then pulled out an ax hidden underneath his coat and attacked the woman.

“She tried to protect her head with her hands,” the spokesman said, adding that the woman has been admitted to a hospital with head and arm injuries.

The man has been detained.

“It was Wednesday morning when he finally sobered up. He could not say anything clear about his actions and demanded to provide him with a lawyer,” he said.
