Libyan opposition rejoices

In Benghazi – the main stronghold of the Jamahiriya opposition forces – a crowd of thousands is cheering triumphantly in connection with the adoption of a UN Security Council resolution on Libya. The residents are singing and dancing. Some are celebrating their joy by firing shots and rounds into the air.

10 out of 15 Security Council members voted for introduction of no-fly zones over Libyan territory. The document also provides for possible military action against the Libyan army and “all necessary measures to protect civilians.” Furthermore, the resolution stipulates tougher sanctions against a number of Libyan leaders and freezing assets of the Libyan National Oil Company and the Central Bank.
