Lucky strike for CSKA in Champions League

CSKA Moscow fans rejoice after a smashing performance at the San Siro stadium in Milan on Wednesday’s night helped their team continue their Champions League quest.

The Muscovites secured all three points in away game against Inter, while a goalless draw between Lille and Trabzonspor let them survive in Europe’s biggest football tournament among clubs.

CSKA opened the scoring through Seydou Doumbia, who converted his team’s attacking efforts early in the second half. They conceded in a minute though, when Esteban Cambiasso fired into an empty net after CSKA error in defense.

Knowing they needed a victory to have any chance of progressing, CSKA pressed for a winner and its hard work paid off four minutes from time when Vasily Berezutski headed home.

Moments before Diego Milito had seen an effort crash off the crossbar and onto the line before going out.

Consequently, CSKA qualified to the Champions League knockout stage, while Lille will recompose themselves in the Europa League. Goalkeeper Tolga Zengin made several fine saves as Trabzonspor scraped a 0-0 draw in France that put both sides out of the Champions League.

Meanwhile, three-time European champions Manchester United have been eliminated from the tournament. They lost 2-1 at FC Basel, with Manchester City joining its local rival on the sidelines despite
beating Bayern Munich.

Elsewhere, Lyon won 7-1 at Dinamo Zagreb to qualify ahead of Ajax in Group D.
