A magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit northern Japan on Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported.
Japan’s national broadcaster NHK said Japanese authorities issued a 50-cm tsunami warning. Later the warning was canceled.
The USGS said the quake occurred at 22:23 GMT Sunday and was 5.9 km (3.7 mile) deep.
Aftershocks continue to rock Japan after a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami shook the country on March 11. The confirmed death count in the devastating disaster is over 10,000 while over 16,000 people are still missing.
The March 11 quake triggered a number of explosions at Japan’s Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. Radiation levels are high around the crippled plant but there is no immediate threat of a massive radioactive contamination.
