Medvedev to take part in SCO summit in Kazakhstan

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will take part in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, due to be held on June 14-15 in Kazakh capital of Astana.

“There are meetings between Russian President and foreign leaders, planned to be held on the sidelines of the summit. Mainly, Kremlin has announced Medvedev’s meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and did not rule out the talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad,” presidential aide Sergei Prikhodko told journalists.

Afghanistan has applied for an observer status in the SCO, which will be considered during the summit.

Among the most important issues on the summit’s agenda are ensuring regional safety and fighting terrorism as well as economic cooperation between SCO members.

The SCO states’ leaders will consider several documents at the event: the Astana declaration focusing on the international situation, and the anti-drug strategy for 2011-2016.

The SCO comprises China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Iran, India, Mongolia and Pakistan hold observer status.
