Mobile Firms Lease Russky Island Site to Prepare for APEC Summit

Russia’s three largest mobile operators, MTS, VimpelCom and MegaFon, will lease a Russky Island site, to build telecom facilities for the APEC Vladivostok 2012 summit, according to a Thursday Kommersant report, quoting sources.

The Russian government will lease 1.91 hectares of the island, in the Russian Far East, close to Vladivostok, to the top three mobile operators and Russian long-distance operator Rostelecom for 49 years, to prepare antenna towers for September’s 24th summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation to be held in Vladivostok, the government source told the paper.

The press service of Russia’s Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications told Kommersant it had asked MTS, MegaFon and VimpelCom to optimize telecom facilities on the island and developed a bill which is being discussed, without specifying the terms of the lease.

Other parties to the deal declined to officially comment to the newspaper, but a manager from one of the mobile operators said that they would be able to use the federal land, which they had not previously had rights to, to establish the required facilities.
