About 150 people gathered on Moscow’s downtown Teatralnaya Square on Saturday in a bid to stage an unsanctioned Day of Wrath rally, 28 of them have been detained, the press service of Moscow police said.
Earlier in the day, police pledged to cut short any attempts of unsanctioned rallies or provocations in the Russian capital as Russia is celebrating Independence Day.
Opposition leader and organizer of the Day of Wrath rally Sergei Udaltsov is one of those detained. Police dismissed media reports saying that 800 people have come to Teatralnaya Square.
About 20 public events, including fairs, open-airs and mass festivities are currently being held in Moscow to mark the Independence Day.
