A Moscow court on Monday sentenced a women to 14 years in a penal colony for the brutal murder of her two-month-old granddaughter.
The court heard that Muscovite Valentina Khrapova, 50, beat and then strangled the child on October 13, 2010 before throwing the body in the waste disposal chute outside her apartment. She had been drinking.
Police said that the child was born prematurely, was ill and “cried constantly.” They also said that the child’s mother “didn’t need” the child and had handed over responsibility for her to her own mother – Khrapova.
When police entered the apartment, a sober Khrpaova admitted everything.
Russia has an appalling record on child abuse, with some 2,000 children killed every year by adults, in many cases their parents or other family members.
