No Russia-Abkhazia Highway

Abkhazian President Alexander Ankvab said on Thursday he opposed the idea of building another highway from Russia to the former Georgian republic.

So far, the only road from Russia to Abkhazia runs through the Black Sea resort city of Sochi. Authorities of the Karachai-Circassia Republic in Russia’s North Caucasus have proposed a commercial project to restore traffic via the Sukhumi Military Road, built in the 19th century.

“I oppose this project because it envisages the construction of a highway via the Kodori Gorge, which is a nature conservation area,” Ankvab told journalists in the capital Sukhumi.

He also said the republic’s authorities would not authorize any project to build yacht marinas on the republic’s Black Sea coast.

“Such sea coast projects can cause enormous environmental harm. Yacht marinas are ruled out,” the president said.
