KAZAN, August 10 (Itar-Tass) — One worker died and eight others were injured as scaffolding collapsed at a construction site in the Universiade-2013 Village in Kazan, a spokesman for the crisis medicine centre of the Republic of Tatarstan told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.
“The accident took place at a building under construction in the Village early on Wednesday. Scaffolding with workers, building materials and tools collapsed on men working right beneath. Nine were injured, one of them died on the spot,” the spokesman said.
An investigation is underway. According to preliminary information, the accident might have been caused by a violation of safety rules and technical norms.
The Universiade Village, which is being built in Kazan’ s Parina Street, will accommodate up to 15,000 people. It will feature a number of five to fourteen-storey dwelling houses. The first portion of the housing was commissioned in September 2010. Now these houses accommodate students of Kazan-based higher educational establishments.
The second phase of the Universiade Village is planned to be put into operation in 2011. Apart from dwelling houses the Village will have an administrative centre that will house a command point, accreditation and catering areas, a concert hall and conference rooms.
The Village will also have a press centre for 1,000 journalists, a scene of today’s accident.
