One Police Officer, Two Militants Killed in Security Sweep in Dagestan

One security officer was killed and another two injured in a special operation in Dagestan in Russia’s volatile North Caucasus Region that killed two militants, the republican investigation department said on Sunday.

On Sunday morning, security officers blocked a private house in the village of Novosasitly in the Khasavyurt district in central Dagestan where a group of militants was hiding.

“The active phase of the special operation in the village of Novosasitly is over. Investigators are working on the scene. During the special operation, one security officer was killed and another two injured,” the investigative department said.

“According to preliminary data, two militants have been killed. However, it is not ruled out that the bodies of other militants may be found during the search of the house,” the investigative department said.

Russia has been battling a low-level Islamist insurgency in the region. Volatile Dagestan, which borders Chechnya, has seen around half of all militant attacks in Russia in the past two years.

According to official data, Dagestan registered 96 militant attacks on police officers and 100 shootouts between police and militants in 2011.
