One police officer was killed and over 20 others wounded on Friday in the western Syrian city of Homs after unidentified armed assailants attacked them, Syrian state television reported.
The deadly clashes occurred during protest demonstrations that started in the country’s third largest city after midday prayer. There have been no reports of deaths among the demonstrators.
Another report said armed people attacked a military motor depot and a military enlistment office in the city of Deir ez Zor in northeastern Syria. Six servicemen, including two officers, were wounded.
Protest demonstrations in Damascus have been accompanied by riots.
Syrian rights organizations have estimated that some 1,300 people have been killed and more than 10,000 arrested in Syria since protests demanding the end of President Bashar al-Assad’s authoritarian rule broke out in the country in mid-March.
Foreign journalists are banned from entering the country which makes it difficult to verify the figures.
