Only 2% of Americans Consider Russia ‘Greatest Enemy’

Only 2 percent of Americans consider Russia the main enemy of their country, compared to 32 percent for Iran, according to a new poll by the Gallup agency.

Iran led the vote for the United States’ greatest enemy same as last year, when it also ranked first, but with only 25 percent.

China ranked second with 23 percent this year, compared to 16 percent in 2011, when it also was the runner-up. The figure is the highest since Gallup launched the poll in 2001.

North Korea was third with 10 percent, followed by Afghanistan (7 percent) and Iraq (5 percent). Figures for all three countries decreased from last year.

Russia shared the sixth place with Pakistan. Japan and Saudi Arabia followed with 1 percent each, according to the poll, released on Monday. The same number of Americans ranked the United States as its own greatest enemy.

One percent of respondents said the country has no greatest enemy, while 11 percent professed to have no opinion on the matter. The poll, held between February 2 and 5, included 1,095 adult Americans across the country and had a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
