Organisers blamed for Games fiasco

India’s Government is reviewing a report on last year’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi, which says organisers spent hundreds of millions of dollars more than was needed.
The report, commissioned by the government amid an uproar over alleged corruption, says delays, administrative inefficiency and wasteful spending cost the country $355m (pound;220m).
It blames Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and the Games’ organising committee for failing to oversee the spending.
India had hoped the Commonwealth Games would project the country as a rising superpower, but instead was embarrassed by corruption allegations, delays and cost overruns as the budget ballooned to $15bn from the estimated $412m.
