MOSCOW, August 22 (Itar-Tass) —— In accordance with the state programme of arming, it is planned to build more than 10 multipurpose Yasen class nuclear-powered submarines of project 885 before 2020, a source in the Military Industrial Commission at the Russian government told ITAR-TASS on Monday.
“Sevmash is to build more than 10 nuclear-powered submarines of this class armed with cruise missiles “Oniks” or similar ones with a flight range of several hundreds of kilometres, rocket-torpedoes and torpedoes,” he said. “The multi-variant application of destruction weapons – – both nuclear and conventional ones are envisaged,” the source said.
According to him, Yasen class submarines are intended for destroying submarines, including those carrying missiles, deliver strikes on ship dispositions, first of all aircraft-carrying ones, naval bases, ports and other coastal facilities.
Earlier, it was reported about plans to build in Russia up to six Yasen class nuclear-powered submarines in Russia.
