Peru vows support to Russia in APEC chairmanship, accession to WTO

LIMA, August 23 (Itar-Tass) —— Peru supports Russia in the period of chairmanship in the APEC and in the accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), says a statement of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Peruvian Justice Minister Francisco Eguiguren Praelli posted in Lima on Tuesday.

Eguiguren held negotiations with Lavrov because of the ailment of Peruvian Foreign Minister Rafael Roncagliolo Orbegozo, the local media said.

“Peru will support Russia in the period of its chairmanship in the APEC in 2012, primarily the successful holding of the APEC Vladivostok summit,” the statement said.

Russia welcomed “the intention of Peru to head the new working group for fisheries and oceans, which will be formed in the merger of the APEC working groups for fisheries and for preservation of sea resources,” the statement said.

Peru also pledged support “to the Russian accession to the WTO and said that the membership would strengthen the world trade system.”

The statement said that Russia and Peru might sign an agreement on the protection of investments and the mutual recognition of education and academic degrees. The ministers called for accelerating the process.

They called for ending the formation of the bilateral intergovernmental commission for military-technical cooperation as well.

Peruvian President Ollanta Moises Humala Tasso may visit Russia soon, the Peruvian minister said.

“Our president has taken an interest in the invitation to visit Russia. He hopes to do that soon,” the minister said.

He also said at a Peruvian deputy foreign minister would visit Moscow in November.

In turn, Lavrov said that Moscow would host a meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation and Fishing. He also said at a Peruvian deputy foreign minister would visit Moscow in November.
