Putin Pays Tribute to Counterintelligence

MOSCOW, June 7 (RIA Novosti) – Counterintelligence is as relevant today as ever before, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday.

“Counterintelligence stands out among other areas of activity, of course,” he said during a meeting with officers from Russian defense, security, intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

“As can be seen from some recent events, it is far from losing its relevance today,” he added.

In mid-May, Ryan Christopher Fogle, a US diplomat working as a third secretary in the American Embassy’s political department in Moscow, was detained as he attempted to recruit a Russian special service officer. Fogle was subsequently declared persona non grata.

A man identified as an FSB officer later told Russia’s Channel 1 television that the CIA had long been working hard to infiltrate Russian security and intelligence services.
