Putin to Meet with Mining Industry Workers

Russian President Vladimir Putin will on Monday meet with over 500 representatives of Russian mining companies, scientists and industry veterans, the Kremlin reported.

Putin invited them shortly before the Miner Day, celebrated in Russia on the last Sunday of August. This year, it will be marked on August 26, but festivities will be held in regions from Monday.

The share of Russia’s mining industry in global manufacturing totals 9.7 percent, putting the country in third place after the United States and China.

Coal extraction has grown by about a quarter in the past 10 years, with production volumes nearing 340 million metric tons in 2011.
