The South Korean city of Pyeongchang was awarded the 2018 Olympic Games at a vote in Durban, South Africa.
The city beat rival bids from the French city of Annecy and Germany’s Munich in the first round of voting by the International Olympic Committee.
Pyeongchang’s bid team included South Korean President Lee Myung-bak.
The Winter Games have twice been held in Asia before. Both times were in Japan – Sapporo in 1972 and Nagano in 1998.
Before the 2018 Games, Russia’s Black Sea resort city of Sochi will host the 2014 event.
