MOSCOW, November 13 (RIA Novosti) – The Federal Anti-Monopoly Service has fined Russian rail monopoly Russian Railways (RZD) over 2 billion rubles ($70 million) for abusing its dominant position on the freight transportation market, the regulator said on Tuesday.
The competition watchdog has launched a probe into the rail monopoly’s activities after several companies, freight transportation unions and some executive and legislative bodies complained about soaring rail transportation costs, unregulated fees and the monopoly’s refusal to transport cargo.
The watchdog has instructed the rail monopoly to fulfill its transportation orders and streamline interaction with outside contractors and freight operators.
RZD expressed its surprise at the fine, and said it would appeal.
