Rubin have failed to make the group stages of the Champions League after the former Russian champions were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Lyon to bow out of the tournament with a 4-2 aggregate defeat.
The hosts needed a 2-0 win or better to go through after losing the away leg 3-1, but having that away goal.
After a quiet first half the Tatar side, driven on by the home crowd, upped the tempo to take control of the game.
After wasting a couple of good opportunities to score, Rubin finally broke the deadlock 13 minutes from time through Bibras Natkho.
This gave Rubin a glimmer of hope. However, as Rubin piled forward in search of the second goal that could have put them through, they were caught on the break with three minutes to go.
Bakari Kone headed in the equalizer to make it 1-1 on the night, and 4-2 overall.
The European campaign is not over for Rubin, however, as they now go into the Europa League’s group stage.
