Russia Appoints Youngest Minister

MOSCOW, May 22 (RIA Novosti) – Nikolai Nikiforov, 29, is the youngest cabinet member in Russia following his appointment as the minister of communications and mass media, in Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev’s government.

Nikiforov, a former IT and communications minister of the Republic of Tatarstan, was the mastermind behind the successful e-government and IT-park projects in the Volga region.

His meteoric career began in the republic’s capital, Kazan. At age 19 he became deputy director of the Kazan Portal company, and in April 2011 was appointed deputy prime minister and IT and communications minister of Tatarstan.

Nikiforov admires Steve Jobs and likes talking about the future of Russia’s Silicon Valley, according to He is also friends with Anna Chapman, Russia’s answer to a female 007, BiznesOnline, says.

He has everything that is needed to get into the new prime minister’s good books, media analysts say.
