Russia to Introduce Language Tests for Migrants in 2013

A new law that would require migrants to take Russian language tests is due to enter into force next year, according to a government immigration program.

The government and parliament will look at the plan at the end of this year and beginning of next, the government program through 2025 says.

Migrant workers will also be asked questions about Russian history and law.

In May, President Vladimir Putin ordered the tests for labor migrants from the former Soviet republics to be rolled out by November.

Some 14 million foreign citizens arrive in Russia every year, about one-third with the goal of finding jobs, according to the country’s Federal Migration Service.
