Russian admits to making bomb that injured 5-year-old girl in Far East

A 28-year old Russian detained on suspicion of planting a homemade explosive device in a kindergarten in the Far East admitted he had made the bomb himself, a regional investigative committee spokesman said on Tuesday.

A five-year-old girl was injured earlier on Tuesday after she opened a gift box tied with a colorful ribbon, which then exploded in her hands in a kindergarten in the city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

Police later reported that the girl had been hospitalized with severe burns to her hands and eyes.

The detained man, an unemployed resident of Komsomolsk-on-Amur, admitted that he had made the bomb.

The device contained nails and metal scraps to increase damage in the explosion, regional police said.

A criminal investigation has been opened and will involve operatives from Russia’s security service, the FSB, as the case is considered “an attempt to carry out a terrorist attack.”
