Russian blogger to sue Moldovan authorities over ‘harassment’

Russian blogger/writer Eduard Bagirov, who fled home arrest in Moldova following his detention on suspicion of involvement in mass riots, said on Thursday he will sue Moldova’s prosecutor general and acting president.

He also said he was writing a book about his “adventures.”

According to some media reports, he fled on Tuesday in a car trunk and is currently in Moscow.

Bagirov was detained on June 16 on suspicion of organizing mass riots in Moldova in spring 2009. A court ruled that Bagirov stay in custody pending trial.

His flight means Bagirov will now automatically be placed on an international wanted list.

“I will not only take care when traveling abroad – I will sue these guys, too, and they will have to care when traveling abroad as well,” he said.

Moscow has said the case against Bagirov was without merit and that Moldovan authorities failed to provide any credible evidence against him.

On April 7, 2009, a crowd of protesters forced their way into the parliament building and the presidential administration. Some analysts say the events in Moldova were a “Twitter revolution,” or a spontaneous uprising against the Communist regime, while others maintain it was a thoroughly planned coup.
