Russian cosmonaut to celebrate birthday on board of ISS

Russian cosmonaut Andrei Borisenko, a flight engineer of the 27th International Space Station (ISS) expedition, will celebrate his 47th birthday on board of the station on Sunday, a spokesman for the Russian Mission Control center said.

“Sunday is the day off for the crew of the ISS. The crew will congratulate Borisenko with his birthday and have a festive dinner. It will mainly consist of fruits. They will toast him with juice,” the spokesman said.

Traditionally, birthdays on board of the ISS are celebrated with a festive table and the astronauts toast the birthday person with tubes containing juice, as alcoholic beverages are prohibited on the ISS.

Besides Borisenko, the crew on board the ISS consists of Russian cosmonauts Dmitry Kondratyev and Alexander Samokutyayev, European Space Agency astronaut Paolo Nespoli, U.S. NASA astronauts Catherine Coleman and Ronald Garan.

Borisenko, along with Samokutyayev and Garan arrived at the ISS on April 7 on board of the Russian Soyuz TMA-21 piloted spacecraft.
