Russian indicted in identity theft case in United States

A Russian has been indicted in the U.S. state of Rhode Island on charges of stealing the identity of an Ireland-based American, The Boston Globe reported citing the U.S. attorney’s office for Rhode Island.

The indictment said Evgueni Tetioukhine, a Russian citizen living with his wife in Warwick, started using the name Fionghal Solomon MacEoghan in 1993, when he applied for a passport.

The real MacEoghan, who has dual U.S. and Irish citizenship, contacted Warwick police last summer after he discovered on the Internet that someone was using his identity.

According to federal prosecutors, Tetioukhine used the false identity to obtain a $260,000 mortgage, a social security card, a passport, and a driver’s license.

The Russian is due to be arraigned on April 20 in U.S. District Court in Providence.
