Iran’s nuclear program is expected to be discussed in a meeting today in Moscow between the Russian and Iranian foreign ministers, Sergei Lavrov and Ali Akbar Salehi.
On August 16, President Mahmud Ahmadinejad said Iran welcomes a Russian proposal aimed at restarting international talks on Tehran’s nuclear program.
The proposal is said to include a gradual easing of United Nations sanctions against Iran in exchange for Tehran addressing questions about its nuclear drive.
Iran is currently under four sets of UN Security Council sanctions over its refusal to suspend uranium enrichment.
Several rounds of talks involving Iran and the world powers group of Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States have failed to result in a breakthrough in the nuclear standoff in recent years.
Western nations say they are concerned that Iran’s nuclear program is aimed at making atomic weapons, a charge Iran denies.
Russia is the builder of Iran’s first atomic power plant at Bushehr.
