Russian Lease to Tajikistan Military Base Under Threat

The agreement extending Russia’s lease of a military base in Tajikistan by 49 years is under threat, Russian Ground Forces commander Col. Gen. Vladimir Chirkin said on Tuesday.

“There are many problems which may put under threat the signing of the agreement on a 49-year extension of Russia’s lease to the Tajik base,” Chirkin said, adding that Tajikistan proposed to cut Russia’s lease of the base to 10 years.

A total of 7,000 Russian troops are stationed in Tajikistan: in Dushanbe; in Qurgonteppa, some 100 km south of Dushanbe; and in Kulob, about 200 km to the southwest of the capital. Russian troops in Tajikistan constitute Moscow’s largest ground force deployment abroad.
