ABAKAN, Russia — Police and Federal Security Service (FSB) personnel searched the offices of Abakan Mayor Nikolai Bulakin on May 25 after he was officially charged with abuse of office, RFE/RL’s Russian Service reports.
Abakan city administration legal affairs department chief Vladimir Chebotaryov told RFE/RL that the Investigative Committee suspects Bulakin, who has been city mayor since 1995, signed documents in 2006-2010 which illegally raising the salaries of selected municipal employees.
It is not clear at this point if Bulakin has been taken into custody.
Abakan is the capital of the Republic of Khakassia.
