MOSCOW — A prominent Russian opposition activist has been sentenced to two days’ administrative arrest, RFE/RL’s Russian Service reports.
Sergei Udaltsov, a coordinator for the opposition Left Front movement, was arrested on March 20 during a protest against rising gasoline prices by the Federation of Car Owners of Russia (FAR).
Udaltsov said on March 21, after the sentencing, that the Moscow court found him guilty of refusing to comply with police demands. He said that witnesses and video footage do not substantiate that charge.
Police said Udaltsov was urging FAR activists to join an unsanctioned “Day of Wrath” antigovernment protest scheduled by opposition groups for April 12.
Udaltsov has been sentenced to several days in jail for similar actions on numerous occasions.
