MOSCOW — Some 20 opposition activists have staged a series of individual protests in front of the Russian Prosecutor-General’s Office in Moscow, RFE/RL’s Russian Service reports.
The activists superseded one another with placards saying “Freedom to Political Prisoners!” and “Stop Repressions!” Left Front opposition movement coordinator Sergei Udaltsov told RFE/RL that police did not intervene.
Under current legislation, individual protests can be held in Russia without prior permission from the authorities
On November 2, Udaltsov sent an e-mail to the Moscow City Interior Ministry chief (GUVD), Vladimir Kolokoltsev, urging him “to end repression against opposition activists.”
Udaltsov described police measures against himself and other opposition activists as repression. The last incident between Udaltsov and Moscow police occurred on November 1, when police stopped him and several of his colleagues at a subway station and took them to a police station, where, Udaltsov said, antiextremism police officers interrogated them for some three hours without any explanation.
Activists from the unregistered Other Russia political party were prevented by police on November 15 from holding a similar protest in central Moscow under the slogan “Elections without the Opposition Are a Crime!”
Some 20 people were detained at the rally, the same thing that happened to the party in Moscow a week ago under the same slogan.
