A couple in Omsk have named their new baby girl after Russia’s top man.
She is called “Medmia”, and her name consists of the first few letters in the President’s surname, name and patronymic – Medvedev, Dmitry Anatolyevich.
The happy parents say they support the leader’s policies and think their daughter’s name Medmia is very beautiful.
This is not the first time a child’s been given a made-up abbreviation as a name.
The practice was very popular in Soviet times, though the new names were often long and awkward, abbreviating things like “Happy May Day” and “Corn is the Queen of the Fields”
In modern-day Russia, there has been more than one case of a boy being called “Vlapunal,” which means “Vladimir Putin – our leader.”
