Russian Police Cadets Detained for $5 Mln Kidnapping

MOSCOW, March 27 (RIA Novosti) – Four trainee police officers, who are suspected of having kidnapped a young man for a $5 million ransom, have been detained in the Moscow Region, Russia’s Interior Ministry said on Wednesday.

On March 1, the suspects and their two accomplices abducted a young man from his car, after setting up a car accident. The attackers beat him and took him to a private house in the Moscow Region. They later contacted his father and offered to free his son for a $5 million ransom.

“Cadets found guilty in the case will be expelled from the university and dismissed from the Interior Ministry’s service,” the ministry’s statement said. An investigation has been launched.

The abducted young man has been freed, while police officers said they seized non-lethal weapons, electric shockers and masks.
