Russia’s Far East on Alert as Typhoon Bolaven Approaches

Military units of Russia’s Eastern Military District have announced a typhoon alert after Typhoon Bolaven lashed the Japanese island of Okinawa, injuring four people and causing blackouts, head of Eastern Military District press service Lt. Col. Alexander Gordeev said on Tuesday.

Typhoon Bolaven is the strongest to hit the region in several years. On Saturday wind speeds near the center of typhoon reached 70 meters per second (157 miles per hour) and caused waves up to 10 meters high (33 feet). The Russian meteorological service in the Far East is monitoring the “super-typhoon” as it moves to the north.

“Due to the growing threat of Typhoon Bolaven Eastern Military District announced a typhoon alert; all the necessary measures to shelter ships and secure safe passage of ships have been taken,” Gordeev said.

The typhoon could affect the Russian Far East throughout the August 28-September 1 period. Forecasters predict heavy rains and wind gusts of up to 35 meters per second (78 miles per hour).

The Russian Emergencies Ministry and all military units deployed in the region are at an elevated state of readiness.
