Russia’s Maria Sharapova defeated on Monday China’s Peng Shuai to make the last eight at Wimbledon.
No. 7 Sharapova beat Peng, 6-4, 6-2.
“Last year I lost in the fourth to Serena [Williams] and this year I find myself in the quarter-finals and I’m giving myself an opportunity to go even further,” Sharapova said at a press-conference at the end of the match.
Earlier this month Sharapova was defeated by China’s Li Na at the French Open semifinals.
Former Wimbledon champion Sharapova last won a major title in 2008, after which her career was hampered by injuries.
No. 4 Victoria Azarenka from Belarus also advanced to the Wimbledon quarter-finals, beating Russia’s Nadia Petrova, 6-2, 6-2.
