UFA, Russia — Six alleged members of the banned Hizb ut-Tahrir Islamic group have been detained in the Russian Republic of Bashkortostan, RFE/RL’s Tatar-Bashkir Service reports.
Bashkir Interior Ministry officials said on April 7 that the republic’s police and Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) carried out a special operation on April 6 in which they raided the apartments of 12 suspects in the capital, Ufa, and the nearby village of Alekseyevka.
Many books with extremist religious content, leaflets propagating Hizb ut-Tahrir and its ideas, and several computers were confiscated.
Of the 12 suspects whose apartments were searched, six were sent to a detention center. The remaining suspects are also under investigation but were not taken into custody.
The suspects are men aged between 17 and 35.
