A suicide bomber blew himself up in the volatile North Caucasus republic of Dagestan on Tuesday, killing one police officer and wounding another.
“According to preliminary data, policemen stopped a young man to check his documents, and he activated an explosive device,” a police spokesman said.
The suicide bomber was apparently walking in the direction of district police headquarters in the Dagestani capital, Makhachkala.
Minutes after the blast, a car bomb was detonated in the center of the city, injuring several people.
Terrorist attacks and shootouts with police have become commonplace in the mostly-Muslim, republic. On Sunday police killed eight militants as part of an anti-terrorist campaign that has lasted for over a decade.
Two police officers were killed and another was wounded in a skirmish with militants in Dagestan’s Izberbash on Monday, while a police officer was shot dead in Makhachkala.
