BISHKEK — A Russian citizen wanted by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) on terrorism charges has been detained in Kyrgyzstan, RFE/RL’s Kyrgyz Service reports.
The State Committee for National Security (UKMK) told journalists on August 9 that the 35-year-old man, whose initials were given as A.A.S., was apprehended in the village of Lebedinovka near Bishkek on the previous day. He was said to have been born in Chechnya and to have worked for the police there.
According to UKMK officials, the man is wanted by the FSB for alleged involvement in a series of terrorist acts in the North Caucasus. UKMK representatives say he may also have been involved in illegal activities in Kyrgyzstan coordinated by Kyrgyz organized crime boss Aziz Batukaev.
The suspect is being held at the UKMK detention center in Bishkek. His possible extradition to Russia is currently being discussed.
