Timoshenko defense appeals court ruling

KIEV, August 7 (Itar-Tass) —— Yuri Sukhov, the lawyer of ex-Ukrainian Prime Minister, Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Timoshenko, appealed her arrest on Sunday. He said he mailed the appeal.

Meanwhile, over 50 parliament deputies and about 200 artists, scientists and public figures have signed the petition for Timoshenko’s release on bail. The document will be presented to court on Monday.

Timoshenko’s supporters built a ten camp near the Pechersky District Court building on the Kiev central street, Kreshchatik. They are collecting signatures to the appeal to President Viktor Yanukovich and Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka. “We demand an end to political repressions and the release of Timoshenko from custody,” they said.

On Friday the court authorized the custody of Timoshenko. She is accused of the illegal signing of gas contracts with Russia in 2009. The Prosecutor General’s Office said that Timoshenko abused her office and caused more than 1.5 billion hryvni (about $200 million) damage to Ukraine.
