Today’s dual anniversaries find space competitors now comrades

Half a century after Yuri Gagarin rocketed into space, giving the Soviet Union the distinction of sending the first human into orbit around the Earth, the Russians again are poised to dominate human space flight.

That’s because NASA plans to retire its space shuttle fleet this summer, leaving the U.S. without a vehicle to ferry its crews to and from the International Space Station.
