Twitter introduces Cyrillic keywords

The Twitter microblogging service has introduced support for Russian-language “hashtag” keywords.

The # symbol, called a hashtag, is used by Twitter users to mark keywords, topics or names in a tweet, in order to categorize messages and improve searching.

The fast-growing Russian audience prompted the microblogging service to introduce a Russian-language Twitter interface this April.

According to comScore, Twitter’s audience has more than doubled in a year, to 190 million unique users registered this May. Glavtwit.ru estimates the Russian-language Twitter audience at 820,000 active users.
